The Sidecar

Andrew was at the local school by this time and Brian would drop him off on his way to the Grammar School, which was a little further down the road. This was a very busy main road, down which trundled, at speed, large petrol lorries from the refinery at Ellesmere Port.

One day, after dropping Andrew off, he glanced in his driving mirror (we had a motor bike & side car at this point) and was horrified to see a small figure running down the middle of the road after him. Stopping, he rushed back to find Andrew in tears saying “you didn't kiss me goodbye”! The incident haunted Brian for years.

Helen, Paul and Lillian's second child gave us a fright the night she was born. She brought up blood after her first feed and Paul & Brian rushed off to hospital with her whilst I stayed with Lillian and prayed desperately for the new baby.

Apparently she lacked Vitamin K, which is necessary for blood clotting, so she had to have a blood transfusion and injection of the vitamin. Thankfully she recovered and blossomed into a fine, healthy little girl.

Sadly, Paul was transferred to Weymouth and we missed them terribly. We did however, go down to visit them and spent a very happy holiday there. I rode pillion on the the bike, which is very tiring over a long journey, so we stayed at a place called Marshfield on the way down.

The only thing I remember about that place was that they served us with burnt custard, which was absolutely revolting!
